I am offering “Kikusui" porcelain for the first time. I had never come across this company before, so I asked an expert in Japanese porcelain - and here are his opinions:
“There were many small china factories in Japan prior to WWII. Some even provided china for the old American "five & dime" stores. Most went out of business during the war. I find no record of a Kikusui factory after 1940.
In my opinion, the Kikusui factory had a very short life since there is little information and few examples online.
If your china says "Nippon" with its mark, it was made before 1921. After that date, imported wares into the USA were required to be written in English. "Japan" was substituted for "Nippon." Most were required to say "Made in Japan."
My best guess is that your pattern is from the l930s. It is even possible that it was made earlier . Still, the pattern is characteristic of the 30's.”
